A YouTube Video Built for AI,
Cited by Google in 2 Days
Happy Tuesday!
Last week I showed you that ChatGPT stopped citing Reddit, and that Google didn't blink. This week: I want to share how YouTube helped a Jolly client earn both a citation and a recommendation, faster than anything else we've tried.
And the video was built for AI, not for humans.
A Quick Word on the Reddit Dip
Mid-August, Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations dropped about 86% in the space of a week. I covered what actually changed, and what didn't, in last week's issue:
The short version: ChatGPT stopped showing Reddit in its citations. It did not stop reading it. And Google barely moved.
So no, we're not dropping Reddit. It's still a critical campaign step: the discovery signal that gets a brand into the conversation.
But a dip like this is a good reminder of why step two exists. Once a brand is discovered, the model goes looking for corroboration. And the corroboration source Google trusts most is video.
What YouTube Added
This is the same construction equipment retailer from #86 and #87, using the same money prompt: which retailers in their category ship nationwide.
This Jolly client already owned their target prompt via a Reddit thread and a blog post.
Even so, we wanted to see what one video would add.
Muskaan produced a 9-minute video and handed it to the client with upload instructions. Her note to them:
“This video has been created primarily for AI systems, not human viewers.”
Muskaan’s upload note to the client
+1 minor request: don't change anything, just use our directions when you upload!
Timeline:
- August 5: video goes live on the client's own channel.
- August 7: video appears in the source panel of Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, and Perplexity cites it by URL.
About 48 hours. Nobody was promoting it.
Where It Did Not Work
Claude listed the client but did not cite the video.
- It went further and flagged that the "ships nationwide" claim came from the client's own marketing page, "so weigh it accordingly."
This lines up with the industry data (more below).
If your buyers live in Gemini or Claude, you want a different lever than video.
YouTube is a Google and Perplexity play.
The Data Behind “Why Video?”
Three studies from this year explain what we saw:
- Google cites a moment inside the video, not the video. BrightEdge (August 20): half of the YouTube URLs Google AI Overviews cite carry a timestamp. That's why the chapter structure matters so much.
- Views don't matter. Otterly analyzed 100M+ citations. Correlation between views and being cited: r = -0.03. Subscribers: -0.03. 41% of cited videos had under 1,000 views. What does correlate, weakly: description length and recency, both around r = 0.3.
- YouTube shows up in more Google AI Overviews than any other domain. Surfer SEO's study of 36 million AI Overviews (March to August 2025 data) found YouTube in 23.3% of them, ahead of Wikipedia at 18.4%.
That chart is our client's result in aggregate form. 19 of 20 YouTube citations happen on the three engines that cited us.
- Claude, where we saw no citation, isn't in Otterly's sample at all.
What We Changed Because of This
If you already have a money prompt where you're cited or recommended, a video is the cheapest corroboration you can add.
Two things:
- Video is now a standard asset in every Own Your Category campaign, alongside Reddit, onsite content, and LinkedIn.
- We broke it out as a standalone YouTube for AI Visibility service for clients who already have Reddit and content covered.
